Comment on Temptations of the Endowment by Mazarine

Dear Katherine,

Thanks for posting about not wasting your endowment! I think it's important to remember that you need to keep your endowment for the future.

The Indianapolis Museum (aka http://imamuseum.org) does this incredible transparency thing on their site, and they let you see the size of their endowment. I blogged about it here:

http://www.wildwomanfundraising.com/work-arts-organization-read/

I think nonprofits would be a lot less tempted to spend their endowments if they were all as transparent as the Indy Museum.

What do you think?

I've been consulting for the past year and a half, and you raise similar issues for me, too. Being a consultant gives me the distance to say things to my clients that I probably couldn't if I were employed by them. They take my comments to heart and know that I'm just as committed as they are, knowing that it's my job to offer advice even if it's not what they wanted to hear.

I had a professor tell me once, "There are no heroes on staff." I instantly understood.

My daughter, when she was little, always was a big fan of "hot dog vegetables": relish, onions, kraut, mixed with a dressing of ketchup, which would come with the dog and the bun. Now she's a vegetarian, so I guess she would eat the hot dog vegetables without the hot dog included.

"It’s enormously effective: there are many weeks where I will hurry to finish some task just because I promised the group I would do it."

Studies show that when you make a public commitments, you are much more likely to comply with that commitment than otherwise. Makes sense.
